Turnitin generates two reports that can be accessed by both instructors and students. This report highlights instances where the text matches another source and if Artificial intelligence was used. The reports are:

  • Similarity Report โ€“ this will highlight your text that is similar to that of another, and which may not be referenced in your submission.

  • Authorship Report โ€“ this will highlight your text that has relied upon Artificial Intelligence such as Chat GPT or Open AI

When will I know the % similarity level?

It may take up to 24 hours for the Turnitin report to be generated. The information is available once the check in completed under Submission Status on IOB Learn.

What is the Turnitin report indicates that the overall similarity level is higher that IOB threshold of 25%?

  • Review the areas highlighted by the report and ensure that they have been properly referenced, if not amend accordingly.

  • Area highlighted as generated by AI, should be amended.

  • Once these changes have been made re-submit.

Cover Sheet

Please be aware that the cover sheet and bibliography, if included in the submission may result in a higher similarity score.

How do I see the overall similarity level for my submission?

Click on submission status.

Under the File submissions a % for similarity level will be displayed (See Figure 1 below) once the check has been completed by Turnitin. The check by Turnitin may take up to 24 hours from the time of submission.

To view the report, click on the % score presented on the screen. The report generates a similarity score which is the percentage of matching or similar text that has been uncovered. Itโ€™s NOT the percentage of plagiarized material in your paper.
